Description

Yoichi is where Japanese whisky began. Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru — the man who learned his craft in Scotland and brought it home — the distillery sits on the windswept coast of Hokkaido, a site chosen precisely because its cool, maritime climate mirrored the Scottish Highlands. This single malt is the purest expression of that vision.

What sets Yoichi apart is how it’s made. The spirit is distilled in pot stills heated over direct coal fires, a labour-intensive, almost-vanished technique that drives the spirit hard and gives it genuine backbone. Built on heavily peated malted barley, it carries a smokiness you simply don’t find elsewhere in Japanese whisky. The nose opens with soft peat smoke, apricot and warm spice; the palate balances that smoke against fresh orchard fruit and toasted nuts, while sea breezes off Ishikari Bay lend a subtle briny edge picked up during maturation. The finish runs long and silky, trailing ripe pear, plum and apple.

Bottled at a generous 45% ABV, it’s bold without ever turning aggressive. Drink it neat to take its full measure, or add a few drops of water to open up the fruit and soften the smoke. It’s a standout sipping whisky for the collector and the curious alike — and just as rewarding alongside smoked meats or a board of aged cheese.
