Description
The Hard Truth Sweet Mash Wheated Bourbon is a genuine bottled-in-bond release from Hard Truth Distilling in Nashville, Indiana — which means it plays by the strictest rules in American whiskey: the product of a single distillery and a single distilling season, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV). For serious bourbon drinkers, that label is shorthand for honesty and quality in the glass.
Two things set it apart. First, it’s wheated: a mash bill of 69% corn, 19% wheat and 12% malted barley swaps the usual rye for soft winter wheat, giving a rounder, mellower, sweeter profile. Second, it’s made by the sweet mash method, where every fermentation starts fresh with no backset carried over from a previous batch — a more painstaking, far less common route than the sour mash most distilleries rely on.
In the glass it lives up to its name. The nose offers brown sugar, toasted caramel and charred oak, lifted by cinnamon and a Dutch-apple-pie warmth. The palate is medium-weight and full of baking-spice sweetness — caramel, butterscotch, cinnamon oatmeal and soft vanilla — before a drier, oak-driven finish lends real backbone. At a full 100 proof it sips beautifully neat, takes a single cube in stride, and makes a superb Old Fashioned.
